Mt. Washington State Park

Join us for an unforgettable hiking experience to the summit of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States. Rising to 6,288 feet, it is one of the most notoriously unpredictable mountains in North America, known for its rapidly changing weather and sweeping panoramic views.

Our journey follows the iconic Lion Head Trail, a highly challenging 7.9-mile out-and-back route with approximately 4,200 feet of elevation gain. The trail winds through lush forest before transitioning into steep rock scrambles and exposed alpine terrain above treeline, offering dramatic views into Tuckerman Ravine and across the White Mountains.

This is a demanding hike best suited for those with good physical fitness and prior hiking experience. Conditions on Mount Washington can shift quickly from sunshine to dense fog and strong winds, so proper gear, layered clothing, and sufficient food and water are essential.

At the summit, we’ll take time to rest, refuel, and soak in the incredible 360-degree views before making our descent together.

Highlights:

  • Summit the highest peak in the Northeast (6,288 ft)
  • Experience diverse ecosystems from forest to alpine tundra
  • Stunning panoramic views of the White Mountains
  • Guided group hike with a supportive and adventurous community

Recommended Gear:

  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Weather-appropriate layers (including wind/rain protection)
  • Plenty of water and high-energy snacks
  • Trekking poles (optional but helpful)

Important Notes:

Safety is our top priority. The hike may be adjusted or rescheduled based on weather conditions. Participants should be comfortable hiking for several hours over steep and uneven terrain.

Activities on Hiking Day

We will conduct a live demonstration of:

  • Movement on fixed lines (as used on Mount Everest)
  • Sherpa rappelling techniques

Led by:

  • Ang Dawa Sherpa
  • Nilhari Bhandari/li>

What is a Fixed Line System?

In mountaineering—especially in the Nepal Himalaya—more than 80% of climbers use a fixed line system.

A fixed line is a rope that is securely installed on a mountain by experienced climbers or guides (often Sherpas). It allows climbers to:

  • Ascend safely on steep or dangerous terrain
  • Move more efficiently with less effort
  • Navigate areas like ice walls or hidden crevasses

Typically, static ropes are used. Climbers attach themselves using mechanical devices such as an ascender (jumar).

Key features:

  • Anchored to rock, ice, or snow
  • Often uses a “Y-hang” system for safety (two anchor points)
  • Common in high-altitude and technical climbing

Equipment for Fixed Line Movement

  • 2.5 m (8 mm) safety rope
